Spencer County residents have a chance to leave their own historical mark through the area’s latest card game.

The Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society announced Friday a new family deck of cards is under development, featuring the county’s historical people, places and things.

“This fundraiser gives the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society the chance to provide a glimpse into the history of Spencer County. We will feature 54 historical photos related to the past life of Spencer County. It is a way to connect old and new, young and old. Who doesn’t like to play a game of Rummy with friends and family, or a game of Go Fish with their kids and grandkids? This could be a fun way to get a conversation started and bring generations together!

“These donations will allow the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society to continue our mission to “Preserve...Promote...Discover!” the history of Spencer County. Our previous efforts include providing signage on unmarked cemeteries, cemetery cleanups, scholarships to Spencer County High School students, historical programs, etc.,” said Ashley Smith, project lead for the society.

Residents can submit a picture to be printed on the face side of a card. Family ancestors, prominent businesses, historic bridges, cemeteries, churches, landmarks, or anything that tells Spencer County’s history are encouraged.

“The possibilities are endless,” Smith said.

Decks of cards are $20 pre-paid, and will available for pickup this summer. For an additional $10, residents can contribute a personal historic photograph of a person, place or thing in Spencer County to be featured on one of the card’s faces.

“Society members are really excited about this project and for our community. We can’t wait to see what our fellow residents submit,” Smith said.
