MOUNT WASHINGTON – The Bullitt East Chargers were expecting a big soccer season in 2022 and so far coach Mike Brangers’ team is meeting those expectations.
Through the first 11 games of the season, the red and gold have ten wins. The lone setback came back on Aug. 25 when the team dropped a 2-1 decision at home to Sixth Region rival Fairdale. Bullitt East has scored at least four goals in every game this season except for the one-goal outing against the Bulldogs.
In the 11 games this season, Bullitt East has a 72-11 scoring advantage.
The most satisfying win of the season came on Tuesday when the Chargers defeated Fern Creek 4-1 at home. One major goal for the team this season is to win a district title for the first time in program history. Bullitt East has not been able to do that in recent years because of Fern Creek, the winners of the district every year since 2012. Bullitt East did beat Fern Creek in 2019 in the regular season meeting 2-1, but then lost to them in the district final, 3-0, before the Chargers went on and won the Sixth Region title.
In this regular season meeting, Bullitt East got single goals from Kingston David, Austin Adams, Jacob Campbell and Jackson Young. Young also had as assist in the win as did Colin Elder and Ethan Davis.
Gabe Brangers, a senior, turned back eight Fern Creek shots in the game while allowing just the one goal.
Before beating Fern Creek, Bullitt East went on the road last Saturday and took the title of the Russellville Panther Classic with a pair of dominating wins. The Chargers beat Trigg County 7-0 and then beat Russellville 10-0.
Against Russellville, Elder added to being the program’s all-time leading scorer as he had four goals and three assists. The red and gold also got three goals by Kingston Davis as well as one from Ethan Davis, Will Brangers and Landon Talley. Tanner Chifwood also had three assists in the win while Brangers and Luke Forget also had assists.
Gabe Brangers did not have to turn back a single shot in the game.
In the first game on Saturday, Bullitt East had no trouble with Trigg County. Elder again was a standout with four goals and two assists. Bullitt East also got goals from Talley, Will Brangers and Chitwood. Will Brangers added an assist as did Young and Ethan Davis.
Gabe Brangers did have to stop two shots in this game, but still got the shutout.
In that game with Fairdale, Elder had the lone goal for the Chargers.
Bullitt East also beat Whitefield Academy and stands at 2-0 in 24th District play with a game this week (maybe) against Jeffersontown. Jeffersontown did play one game early in the season, but has since forfeited two contests.
In that win over Whitefield, Elder was more than the Wildcats could handle, scoring six times Also scoring for the Charges was Jack Tinelli, Logan Hetzell, Chitwood and Sam Hamilton. Each of the David brothers had two assists in the win while Talley had one assist.
On Thursday, Bullitt East defeated Holy Cross 6-4. The stats from that game were not posted in time for this edition of the newspaper.
