The smell coming from the school buses next fall won’t be French fries. Beginning in August, Shelby County’s school buses will be fueled with a 2% mixture of biodiesel, which is made primarily with soybean oil.... The American Cancer Society sponsored its third annual Relay for Life at Doyle Stadium at Shelby County High School and brought in $27,958 for cancer research.... Jean McGrew, who had been teaching French in Shelby County for 25 years, was named the Murray State University Outstanding Teacher; Staci Eddleman, Spanish teacher at SCHS, also received an award — from the Jefferson County Teachers Association.... Casey Hinkle and Jonathan Ford were among only 7,400 of the nation’s students to earn merit scholarships.... Despite hearing residents voice their concerns for a hour, the Triple S Planning and Zoning Commission approved the preliminary plans for the proposed mobile home park on Mack Walters Road.... The Shelby County Community Golf Charities was created with its primary focus to help the family of a local youngster who was diagnosed with a critical medical conditions. They will be given a comprehensive view of the duties and rights of American citizenship.... About 60 employees at the Shelbyville branch of American Air Filter Company went back to work after an 8-week strike, after a new contract was accepted by both management and employees.... Stephen W. Radcliffe, a 1962 graduate of Shelbyville High School, received a Master of Arts in education degree at Eastern Kentucky University.... Michael Ray Perry joined the junior membership ranks of Holstein-Fresian Association of America.... Damages totaling $67,297.65 were awarded in nine suits in the Shelby Circuit Court as the result of a bus-truck crash on U.S. 60 the previous July, when five persons were killed and 10 injured. The total asked in the nine suits was $204,947.... A covered bus used to haul laborers and tools to and from the job and owned by the Shelby County Road Department skidded form the slippery pavement and overturned bottom side up in an 8- or 9-foot gulley on Smithfield Pike, 2.5 miles from Shelbyville. Four men were severely bruised.... Lindsay Batts, cashier of the Bank of Simpsonville, resigned his position to devote his time to his farm, located on U.S. 60, west of Shelbyville.... Serving our country: 1st Lt. Carrol Thomas (Pat) Eddie, stationed in North Africa, was awarded The Order of the Purple Heart, a citation for “extraordinary fidelity and essential service”.... Capt. Elizabeth Hansbrough’s new assignment was in the Nursing Service Headquarters of the Chief of the Army Air Service Command at Patterson Field, Fairfield, near Dayton, Ohio. This was an honorary promotion over a large number of Army hospitals.... Sgt. Ford C. Cowherd was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster, a war decoration for repeated bravery. He was serving with the U.S. Army Air Force in England.... George W. Gill Jr. was promoted to second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army.... Chief Petty Officer W.W.
